A skier from Poland was seriously injured when she was hit by a small plane while skiing down the slopes in the French Alps.

The accident occurred on Thursday when the pilot of the propeller aircraft took off from the runway near the ski resort in Avoriaz near the border of Switzerland.

The pilot lost control of the aircraft, which was equipped with skis. The aircraft slid down the slopes, right past a group of children, under a ski lift and hit the 55 years old woman.

The propeller struck her hand, which according to hospital staff "almost had to be amputated."
