The helicopter was on a night exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida when the machine crashed, officials said.

Andy Bourland, a spokesman for Eglin said the helicopter was reported missing around the 20.30 on Tuesday evening. Search crews found the wreckage around the 02.00 on Tuesday night.

Eleven people are missing.

According to MSNBC, it was a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that crashed. The cause of the accident is not known, but a spokesman says that there was fog in the area.

Black Hawk is a widely used type of helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky. The model has been produced for more than 30 years, and the manufacturer says that more than 2,300 machines are in use.
