"Jihadi John" aka Mohammed Emwazi.
The man is known to British intelligence, but the identity was previously kept hidden because of so-called operational reasons, the BBC writes on their website.
Emwazi appeared for the first time on IS'murder videos in August last year, when he apparently killed US journalist James Foley.
BBC says that Mohammed Emwazi is a British resident born in Kuwait, a former resident of West London. He have been known by the British security service.
Following the killing of Foley, Emwazi is believed to have been depicted in the videos where the American journalist Steven Sotloff, the British aid worker David Haines, the British taxi driver Alan Henning and the American aid worker Abdul Rahman were beheaded.
Last month, the militant "Briton" figured in a video with the Japanese hostages Haruna Yukawa and Kenji Goto shortly before they were killed.
Last year the Islamic state declared the establishment of a "caliphate" in a larger area of Syria and Iraq which is under the organizations control.
Friends of Emwazi said to the Washington Post that he came from a wealthy family and that he had studied computer programming at the university.
