In a study conducted by Ipsos, where the attitudes toward immigration in 25 different countries are measured, the attitude in Sweden and Germany is heading in a negative direction the fastest, Samhällsnytt reports.
A few of the conclusions of the study are that over four out of ten believe immigration has changed the country in which they live in a way they do not like, and twice as many consider immigration to have a general negative impact.
Only one in five (21 percent) believe that immigration has had a positive effect on the country, while two out of five (42 percent) believe the opposite. The most positive countries are Saudi Arabia, India and the UK, while they are most negative in Turkey, Italy, Hungary and Serbia.
The biggest change towards a positive attitude is found among the British and the Americans, while the biggest negative change is in Sweden, where only 25 percent now think that immigration has had a positive effect, compared with 37 percent six years ago.
About half, or 48 percent in the study generally believe that there are too many immigrants in each country. About the same proportion, 49 percent, worries that immigration causes excessive pressure on the social systems. On this point, Sweden is again distinguished, where 56 percent now are concerned, compared to about 40 percent in the previous survey.
Only three out of ten believe immigration has made each country a more interesting place to live.
As far as asylum seekers are concerned, 39 percent want to close their borders completely and 59 percent believe that terrorists use the streams of migrants to get to the West. 53 percent do not believe that most people who come are refugees at all, but instead are economic migrants.
