DENMARK -- Urine from the Roskilde Festival is going to be turned into beer, reports Danish TV2, but it's not as disgusting as it sounds.
In 2015, the urine from thousands of guests at the Roskilde Music Festival outside Copenhagen, was collected in a sustainable "piss project" launched in collaboration with Agriculture and Food.
Nørrebro Brewery will now make the urine from the guests at the Roskilde Festival into sustainable beer.
The urine was subsequently used as fertilizer on two hectares of grain fields near Køge.
The grain has since been harvested, and will now be made into beer.
Carlsberg - otherwise beer sponsor for the Roskilde Festival - has said no to brew the beer.
But Nørrebro Brewery would like to give it a go.
- The brewery union contacted us and heard if we would brew the piss beer. At first I thought: Can we do it? But then I thought: Of course we should, for we are the Nørrebro Brewery. We need to be rebellious. We must be bold. We are not afraid to do something with piss. It's part of our DNA to dare to do it here, says Henrik Vang, director of Nørrebro Brewery, to the media Food Watch.
Nørrebro Brewery expects that the piss-beer to be ready in late June, just in time for this year's festival.
But whether it can be served at this year's Roskilde Festival depends on Carlsberg's benevolence to the project.
Roskilde Festival must namely be allowed to serve beer that is not produced by Carlsberg.
- We are certainly not trying to stop anything, because we do not know much about it. We think it sounds like an exciting project, and we look forward to hearing more, says Kasper Elbjørn who is press officer at Carlsberg, to Food Watch.
