SWEDEN -- Tens of thousands of people who have had their asylum application rejected are expected to 'disappear' in the coming years. Already over 12,000 people have gone underground and are missing to avoid deportation. Many turn to crime.
Police and the Immigration Service are now talking about a growing shadow society where rejected asylum seekers commit crime, work illegally and are used by other criminals, reports Aftonbladet.
- There are examples of apartments with 40, 50 people, where they have put mattresses on the balcony so people can sleep, said border police chief Patrik Engstrom.
As more people are denied asylum, a growing proportion go underground and disappear. Today there are over 12,000 people on the police's list of missing rejected asylum seekers. According to the Migration Board's estimates, about another 32,000 people are expected to do the same in the next three years.
Police are concerned about the numbers, and fear that new parallel societies are emerging.
- An increased number means a risk of an increased number of people staying illegally in the country, but also an increased risk that a so-called parallel society grows up, says Patrik Engström.
