It was in August 2014 that the Syrian man brought his Norwegian wife and children on what they thought was a cosy family holiday to Turkey. Instead they were abducted and forced to join ISIS in Syria.
For four weeks Ruth Meyer Johansen and her five small children from Botnhamn in Northern Senja, were forced to stay in Syria, before her now ex-husband regretted. An important reason for this was that one of the children became very ill. The husband when obtained an exit permit from the IS management in Raqqa, Meyer Johansen told NRK.
Police arrested the husband and charged him with abduction of his own family when they arrived back in Oslo.
Surprisingly he was acquitted of abduction by the Senja District Court, but this ruling has since been overturned by the Hålogaland Court of Appeal. It means that the Syrian man is still charged with abduction, and that there will be a new round in the courts in this case. The new Penal Code of 2005 requires that for certain offenses which are crimes in Norway, it must also be proven that it is also punishable in the country where it took place.
Police Securty Service, PST, charged the Syrian man for participation in a terrorist organization in September last year - over two years after he came back.
Ruth Meyer Johansen believed that the police should have considered charging the man after the terrorist clause § 147 already when they returned to Norway in September 2014.
Which the 38-year-old Syrian man now is accused of violating; section 147a and 147d, for having planned or prepared a terrorist act, and for participating in a terrorist organization.
PST's charges against the 38-year-old include; having put himself under IS command, let himself to be transported by them, and participated in their training program, which included weapons and shooting training.
The trial for terrorism charges is expected to come up in the Oslo District Court before the summer.
