The Swedish Migration Board promises to "focus on working with quality issues," after an audit reveals that half of the asylum seekers are not properly investigated.
Last year the Swedish Migration Board decided on over 100,000 asylum cases and has recruited many new employees, which is given as an explanation for the dangerous lack of quality regarding investigations of the applicants.
In half of the asylum cases from last year, audited by the Swedish Migration Board, there are shortcomings in the investigation. The agency's legal chief explains the reason with that many of the employees are "young and enthusiastic," reports SR.
The Swedish Migration Board has reviewed 400 cases from 2016 to review the quality of the asylum process, and the result is disappointing.
In half of the cases, the investigations were incomplete - for example, it was often not investigated if the immigrants actually had grounds for protection, writes SR. Over a quarter, 27 percent of asylum assessments may be inaccurate.
Fredrik Beijer, Director of Legal Affairs at the Swedish Migration Board, believes that one explanation for the shortcomings may be that the agency hired many new employees as a result of the asylum chaos.
- I think it has to do with that we have young, enthusiastic, but relatively inexperienced employees, that we have a very complexed issue to work with, as asylum investigations are among the most complex there are actually, and I do not think it is so surprising that we see that we can do things better in the situation than we have done, he says to SR.
According to Beijer, the Migration Board will now "focus on working with quality issues and skills development."
