There are now indications that the Quebec City mosque shooting was in fact an attack on Muslims by a non-Muslim, as Alexandre Bissonnette has been identified as the only gunman.
Quebec provincial police now say that only one of the two men detained Sunday night in connection with the mass shooting at a mosque in Quebec City that killed six people is considered a suspect, reports Global News.
Surete du Quebec said in a statement just after 12 p.m. ET Monday the second person is considered a witness, but they did not name him. Multiple media reports identified the “witness” as Mohamed Belkhadir. Earlier reports said the man’s name was Mohamed Khadir.
Reports from Quebec media, including La Presse, TVA, and Radio Canada, say that Alexandre Bissonnette is the lone person suspected in the shooting.
The horrific shooting occurred inside the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec in Quebec City’s Ste-Foy neighbourhood just before 8 p.m. ET, when a masked gunman entered the building and opened fire, according to witnesses and police.
If this, despite the man shouting Allahu Akbar as he killed, is a racially or religiously motivated attack against Muslims, it reminds of the media confusion in 2011, when Anders Behring Breivik went berserk on Utøya. Then news reports said Islamic terror instantly, because that was what everybody expected. Attacks the other way around, although Breivik killed mostly Norwegians, are so extremely rare that Breivik became a sensation world wide, in Norway for years.
