The EU has agreed on tightening the rules to have a better overview of who they let in or out of the Schengen area, which means that Europeans travelling outside Europe, now will be subjected to mandatory and systematic document and security checks.
EU citizens will have to go through a mandatory and systematic control at the Union's external border. The control means that passengers are checked against relevant databases, reports NTB.
The European Parliament and the Council of Ministers, on Monday agreed on a tightening of the rules to be introduced in the border regulations for the Schengen area.
Travellers from countries outside the Schengen area are already subject to systematic document and security checks when entering the Schengen area. The new is that also EU citizens will be checked against relevant databases within the Schengen cooperation and with Interpol.
- In wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015, we proposed to introduce systematic monitoring of all citizens at all external borders, so that we know exactly who cross our borders, said EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos. He is pleased that the two institutions have agreed to introduce the amendments, and the Commission expects that this will now happen quickly.
- In addition to the creation of a European border and coast guard in October, this is an important step in efforts to preserve the freedom of movement within the Schengen, and to ensure the safety of citizens.
