The Swedish government announced this week that Sweden this year and next year will have to accommodate more refugees than ever, while the housing situation is already acute in municipalities.
The city of Stockholm has decided to turn to a last resort and has rented expensive hotel rooms to the newly arrived asylum seekers. The initiative is believed to cost between SEK 20 and 40 million ($4,3 million), reports Dagens Industri.
Previously, asylum seekers from the Third World have been housed in luxury mansions and castles across the country. But in Stockholm the housing situation is now so acute that even immigrants who have been granted asylum - so-called "newcomers" - get to stay for at hotels for free.
The city of Stockholm will under the quota system receive 2,810 newly arrived asylum seekers this year, but has yet to arrange for accommodation for over 800 of them.

The City Council therefore decided on Monday to rent hotels and hostels, where the immigrants will get to stay, all at the expense of the Swedish taxpayers.
The Christian Democrats was the only party in the alliance that opposed the proposal, according to Dagens Industri.
- I think it's unfortunate to choose such an expensive solution for accommodation. It is bad both for taxpayers and for the integration, says Erik Slottner, the Christian Democrat's group leader in Stockholm, to Dagens Industri.
