It was an embarrassing moment at the UN headquarters on Friday, when the US voted against a resolution condemning "glorification of Nazism."
The superpower had namely just the support of Ukraine and the small banana-producing Republic of Palau after the votes had been counted, reports AP.
The resolution was entitled "Combating glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance," and was supported by, among others, Russia.
The emergence of the resolution comes in light of the Ukrainian government's controversial decision to recruit foreign neo-Nazis to fight against its own citizens in the low frequency civil war that is still ongoing in the eastern parts of the country.
The resolution was adopted by the UN Human Rights Council on Friday, with 131 votes in favor, 3 against and 48 absent.
Besides the United States, Ukraine - which the resolution indirectly is targeting, voted against it. The two countries were supported by little Palau, an island with 21,000 residents. According to Barack Obama's spokesperson, however, the US decision had nothing to do with Ukraine, but was about America's traditional strong support for freedom of expression.
“Due to this resolution’s overly narrow scope and politicized nature, and because it calls for unacceptable limits on the fundamental freedom of expression the United States cannot support it,” the U.S. mission said in a statement.
