NATO Defence Ministers decided during the meeting in Brussels on 26 October 2016 to deploy 4,000 combat-ready troops in Eastern Europe, short from the Russian border. These are front forces ready to be backed up by a quick-reacting force of 40,000 soldiers.
This is the largest military escalation in Europe since the climax of the Cold War between the US and the former Soviet Union.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the troops will be stationed in Poland and the three Baltic states. And he repeated that "an attack on one member state will be seen as an attack on all."
Former NATO opponent and now boss of the treaty, Jens Stoltenberg, actually said that the deployments and measures were not intended as a threat to Russia. (?) He also said that NATO will send more warships into the Black Sea.
"And I’m pleased to confirm that several nations indicated their willingness to contribute to our presence in the Black Sea region, on land, at sea and in the air."
US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said the United States will send 900 soldiers in a battle-ready battalion to eastern Poland. Additionally the US send an armored brigade complete with tanks and heavy artillery, and Black Hawk attack helicopters to the border with Russia.
This comes as the decision to station 330 troops from the United States in Norway, which has never happened before, not even during the Cold War.
Britain will be stationing 800 soldiers in Estonia, fully equipped with tanks, armored vehicles and drones. They will be supported by units from France and Denmark. For the first time since Nazi Germany conducted advances against Russia, also Germany now send troops toward the Russian border. They come as a battalion of 400 to 600 soldiers to be placed in Lithuania. Canada and Italy will send troops to Latvia.
There is nothing to suggest that Russia is planning or has interest of attacking any of its neighbouring country at the moment, and Putin has even come forward to say so. This is an aggressive escalation by NATO, and the increasing danger of war helps to destabilize Europe. War preparations are also good business for the arms industry, and they work well to suppress internal opposition. As both Europe and the US are struggling economically, politically and socially, preparation for war is a straw.
Why we let these psychotic leaders decide our fate, is a mystery.
