Language skills saved her from being raped
NORWAY -- A 48-year-old Norwegian woman went to the toilet at a pub, a unisex toilet, where she saw two Somali asylum seekers hanging around, waiting to rape her. But to their surprise, she knew exactly what they were up to.

- I was with a good friend, a former superintendent in the Sør-Trøndelag Police District. It was late at night, a very hot evening in July, I had a black dress, low-cut at the back, but not especially daring, and not mini. Late that evening, when the pub was almost empty, I had to go to the toilet. I was not drunk and only had a little beer. Then I heard the two men (this is a unisex toilet with a shared sink for ladies and gentlemen) speak in Italian about raping me, and that they would attack me when I opened the door. I did NOT open the door. Instead I shouted load in Italian that I would call the police, even though my phone was in my purse in the pub. Then, shocked that I understood what they were up to, they ran out. My friend only managed to catch a glimpse of the back of both, but I reported the matter to the police the following day. I was shocked and quite shaky, but thank God that I know Italian and knew that Somalia is a former Italian colony, plus that many asylum seekers are long in italy before they come here.

The incident was impossible to prove, so the case was dismissed, but she says she wants to warn others.

- My bluff with the phone succeeded, fortunately. But what if this had been a drunk girl who did not understand Italian? Horror! They knew exactly how to choose the time. This was just before the venue closed and people were starting to leave.

It is rather unusual for Norwegians to know Italian, but she says she sings opera and wanted to know what the lyrics mean.

- I took an Italian semester at the University of Oslo in 1998, and has since taken 4 courses at the Italian Cultural Institute when I attended Tourism Management in Oslo from 2002 to 2005. I got interested in the language through an Italian musician I sang with at a hotel in Corfu in 1994. I sing opera and wanted to know what the lyrics mean.

She says she wants to remain anonymous as she lives in a small town, and the reception center for asylum seekers is only 2 km away.
