Two policewomen were injured when they were attacked by a Muslim man armed with a machete in the Belgian city of Charleroi.

Police writes on Twitter that he shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great, in Arabic) as he attacked.

The news agency Belga reported that the perpetrator was shot and wounded by a third police officer outside the police station in the town located south of Brussels.

Belgian media reports that the condition of the perpetrator is serious.

One policewoman got a deep cut in the face, while the other is reported to be slightly injured. Both were taken to hospital.

Police have cordoned off a large area at the place where the attack took place.
