Enormous forest fire in Canada
Already on Tuesday, 88 000 people were evacuated from Fort McMurray in Canada, because of the raging forest fire, which now covers an area of 101,000 hectares, or 1,000 square kilometers.

Fort McMurray is in Alberta, located southwest of Canada.

- This is a dangerous, unpredictable and very serious fire, says Minister for Civil Emergency, Ralph Goodale.

The forest in the area is very dry, giving the fire opportunities to grow even larger and more dangerous.

Firefighters from the provinces around Fort McMurray are now being brought in to help fight the fire, which Goodale describes as "a monster of a fire".

No help is expected from the weather, as dry weather is still forecasted. The area has not had rain of significance in two months, and Friday the fire chief of Alberta, Chad Morrison, hinted that "the fire is going to continue for very long if that doesn't change."

Temperatures of up to 28 degrees Celcius also makes the extinguishing job extra challenging.

- It's going to be an extremely flammable day. Today will definitely be a very, very challenging day, and the growth of the fire is potentially quite large, said Matthew Anderson, a spokesman for the government of Alberta.

The fire has so far put entire neighborhoods in ruins. Most of the 88,000 who fled from the fire left their homes without knowing the fate of their homes.

Over 1,600 homes have been lost to the flames so far, but no people have been killed.
