London gets its first Muslim mayor
Labour politician Sadiq Khan is the new mayor of London, Sky News reports.

That means that the British capital gets its first Muslim mayor. The result comes after a rather heated election campaign, which the leader of Labour, Jeremy Corbyn, has called "horrid."

Opinion polls ahead of the elections gave Khan a lead of 12 to 14 percent ahead of the main challenger Zac Goldsmith. The result is not officially confirmed, but both Sky News and the Daily Telegraph reports that Khan has been victorious.

The housing crisis has been one of the main themes of the London mayor elections.

Sadiq Khan has also said that he will make London open all hours and more attractive to tourists.

- Our culture is our "crown jewels". Therefore, I will make sure we get our culture better promoted overseas, he said to NTB a few days before the election.

Khan's takes over for Boris Johnson, who has been the city's mayor for the past eight years.

"It is time that I retire from City Hall. It has been an incredible privilege to be the mayor," was Boris Johnson's last tweet from the official Twitter account as London's mayor.
