By treating patiens with a combination of two already known drugs, British doctors have successfully cured aggressive breast cancer in just 11 days, and now the hope is that this cancer treatment can completely replace chemotherapy, writes the BBC.
The results were announced at the European Breast Cancer Conference on
March 11 this year, and experts say the results are "dramatic".
The British doctors treated the patiens with a combination of the drugs Lapatinib and Herceptin.
Actually they only examined the ability to halt particularly aggressive breast cancer in the period between diagnosis and the subsequent surgery and chemotherapy but the results were astounding.
In all 66 women with cancer nodules of between 1 and 3 cm, were treated, and in 7 women the cancer knot disappeared completely, while in a further 11 it was reduced to below 5 mm in size.
In several cases women showed up to the agreed operation after only 11 days of the cancer treatment, and then the surgeon could tell that there was nothing to remove.
The particularly aggressive breast cancer affects one in ten breast cancer patient, and due to the protein HER2, which causes cancer nodules, it is particularly resistant to cancer therapy.
"These results are extremely promising if they prove durable, and this could be the first step toward a whole new way to treat HER2-positive breast cancer," says Professor Arnie Purushotham at the Cancer Research UK.
