The Danish Environment and Food Minister, Eva Kjer Hansen, resigns from the government, which has prevented a government crisis in Denmark.
Just hours before she resigned, the leader of the Conservative Party, Søren Pape Poulsen, insisted that Kjer Hansen had to go, even though the party still supports the government of Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
- I have today given the Prime Minister notice that I withdraw from my post as Environment and Food Minister, said Kjer Hansen in a statement Saturday morning, in which she made it clear that she would not stand in the way of the government's future.
Kjer Hansen has been accused of having misled the Parliament with errors in the environmental accounts in the government's agricultural package.
She is accused of giving more consideration to the farmers than to the environment.
The opposition had therefore posed a no confidence motion against her, a no confidence motion that also the Conservative Party supported, although not signed in writing.
Løkke Rasmussen has refused to let Kjer Hansen go, and said that he would rather have a new election than to dismiss her, and if she had not resigned, Denmark would be heading for a government crisis and new elections.
