France warns: Europe must prepare for major terrorist attacks
European countries must prepare for several major terrorist attacks, carried out by militants, says the warning from Manuel Valls, France's prime minister.

Manuel Valls says the murderous ideology driving groups such as Islamic State is "at the heart of our societies".

"We have entered - we all feel it - a new era characterised by the lasting presence of hyper-terrorism," says Valls at the annual Munich Security Conference.

"We must be fully conscious of the threat, and react with a very great force and great lucidity. There will be attacks. Large-scale attacks. It's a certainty. This hyper-terrorism is here to stay," believes the French prime minister.

Last year France was hit by two larger terrorist attacks.

In January 2015, the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket were hit.

16 people were killed when three terrorists attacked. They also killed a female police officer in the Paris suburb of Montrouge.

In November, 130 people were killed when a group of jihadists from the Islamic State (IS) used suicide bombers and opened fire several places in the French capital, including at a rock concert.
