Japan sent jet fighters towards Chinese military aircraft
Japan says jet fighters were deployed when two Chinese military planes approached Japanese airspace.

One of the Chinese planes was a Y9 used for intelligence work. The aircraft was at one point only about 100 kilometers from the island of Kyushu in southwestern Japan on Sunday morning, said the Japanese government Monday.

The Government spokesman would not disclose how many jet fighters that were deployed.

The Chinese planes flew over the Korea Strait and were above the Sea of Japan for several hours before they returned to China via the same strait.

It is assumed that the planes were out to gather information about a Japanese ship which is situated in the area in case North Korea carries out a a rocket launch.

Japanese airspace was not violated.

From April to December last year, Japanese planes were on their wings to observe Chinese planes 373 times.

183 times they were sent up to keep an eye on Russian planes.
