The sad news that music-icon and world famous artist David Bowie has passed away just came.

The death was announced on Bowie's official Facebook page Monday morning:

"January 10 2016 - David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

Bowie celebrated his 69th birthday on Friday, and just last week he released his 29th album, Black Star.

However, Bowie has, according to the British media, rarely been seen in public in recent months.

"Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all," his son Duncan Jones writes on Twitter.

David Bowie was born on 8 January 1947 and is among other known for the songs "Space Oddity" in 1969 and "Let's Dance" from 1983. He has also appeared in numerous movies.
