Despite the year 2016, many places in the world still use old brutal religious laws that originate from the 6th century and should have been obsolete ages ago. The obvious problem is that people in these places are so severely brainwashed by religion that they seem pleased with it.

On Monday, six people were caned in public for indecent behavior and gambling in the city of Banda Aceh in Indonesia - where sharia law applies.

According to the Jakarta Post, citing the news agency Antara, two students were among the six who were punished.

The two - a 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman - were punished for having had intimate contact (kissing) without being married. According to Reuters, the two are romantically involved.

Ambulance needed

The punishments happened according to Jakarta Post in front of a mosque in the area, with hundreds of people as witnesses. Each of the six persons who were punished were given five strokes each with a cane.

First out was the 20-year-old woman.

Photos of the incident show that the woman has severe pain and screaming in agony during the punishment - and that she then had to be carried away from the site by paramedics.

The pictures show spectators filming the moment with smartphones.

- Take these punishments as a lesson. What has been done with these convicts should not be taken as an example. And I hope the punishments in the Meuraxa district today will be the last ever, said Mayor Zainal Arifin in the town, to Antara, according to the Jakarta Post.

He urged people not to isolate the people after they had received their punishment, and reminded those who were punished not to repeat their crimes.

Affects all, regardless of religion

It is not the first time public punishments have been carried out in the province.

Sharia Law was introduced in the Aceh Province already in 2001, but according to Al-Jazeera, in September last year the rules of Sharia-punishments were extended to affect all citizens in the province, regardless of religion.

The Aceh province is the most conservative province in the country, and according to Reuters, the only one where sharia law is the law of the land.

Sharia law in Europe

Among a number of different Muslim countries where Sharia law applies, two European countries stand out. Sharia law has gotten a foothold in both Germany and the UK.

Sharia law is part of the Germany's private law through the regulations of the German international private law. It applies to people with nationalties from countries using Sharia law. Its application is limited by the ordre public.

As of 2014, there were reported to be around 85 "shariah courts" in the UK, operated by two rival services -- Islamic Sharia Council and the newer, smaller, less strict Muslim Arbitration Tribunal. The councils/tribunals provide arbitration that is voluntary but legally binding, are "officially mandated" and set up outside the court system.
