In a recent report by Swedish Television (SVT), Eskilstuna sports club basketball team welcomes the newly arrived immigrant youth to the team, to show that youth sport in this way fulfills an integrating function.
The focus of the story is Mohammad Soheil Nabizadeh from Afghanistan, who recently turned 14.
To celebrate his 14th birthday Mohammad invited the teammates from the basketball club to a party.
Apparently Mohammad also celebrated the birthday by cultivating a fashionable full beard.
The reportage shows that Muhammad is considerably longer and stronger than his ethnic Swedish 14-year-old teammates, which of course is a great advantage in basketball and a great disadvantage to the other team.
By arriving to Sweden as refugees without any identification papers, and without Sweden performing any age testing, it is pretty much up to the refugees themselves to come up with a name and an age, and the authorities are left with no other choice than to believe them.
You can assess for yourself if the aspiring basketball star Mohammad's age information is correct, but one thing is for sure: Eskilstuna sports club basketball team - age 14, will do good in the basketball league next year.
