They are cute and cuddly. But according to a new personality study, your cat has the same impulsive and neurotic behavior as its dangerous conspecifics.

We like to invite cats into our homes as cute pets. But researchers who have looked at our furry friends' personality traits, now points out that cats have a sinister and dark side hidden behind the big innocent eyes.

The survey was conducted in collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and the Bronx Zoo. They sat down to compare domestic cats with their wild counterparts, as snow leopards and African lions, writes the Daily Mail.

Overall, the researchers found that domesticated cats have many features in common with the wild beasts. Among other things, they found much of the same aggressive and neurotic behavior of the 100 cats that 'participated' in the study.

Especially dominance and impulsivity were traits which recurred in both the domestic cats and their conspecifics.

- They're cute, they are furry and cuddly, but we must remember that when we have cats as pets, we invite small predators into our homes, says psychologist Max Wachtel, one of the researchers behind the study, to 9NEWS.

- For many people it is worth it. Cats can be fabulous sweet life partners. Until they turn against you, says the psychologist.

He says that only the domestic cat's size prevents them from setting their inner predator instincts free.

- It is good to know our pet's personality traits. Different cats have different personalities. But as a species, there are many similarities, says Max Wachtel, according to the Daily Mail.
