Facebook is celebrating a new record.

Over 1 billion people were logged into the social network on the same day.

- We just passed an important milestone. On Monday, one of seven people on Earth used Facebook to contact friends and family, declared Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday - of course in a message on his own Facebook page.

The site's founder says he hopes the world may one day meet on Facebook.

In July, the company said that the number of monthly active users has reached 1.49 billion.

That is an increase of 13 percent in one year.

The number of active mobile users rose to 1.31 billion.
