When World War II ended on August 14 in 1945, the iconic picture of a sailor and a nurse kissing in New York was taken. Today - 70 years later, couples marked the anniversary by recreating the image.

Dressed in sailor uniform the American marine soldier leans a nurse backwards and gives her a kiss on the mouth.

The moment was captured on a black and white photography taken in Times Square in New York on 14 August 1945 when it became known that Japan had surrendered and that World War II was over.

The picture was published a week later in Life magazine as part of a twelve page article titled "Victory Celebrations," and has since gone under the name "Victory Japan Day in Times Square", "V-Day", "The Kiss" and "Kissing the War Goodbye."

The picture is taken by photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt.

The image has been recreated in the past, but on 14 August 2015 it was again recreated at Times Square in New York, by young couple dressed as sailors and nurses, to celebrate the 70th anniversary.

When Eisenstaedt took the famous picture, he not written down the names of the couple and the details surrounding who kissed. For a long time several magazines therefore described the whole thing as a mystery, and several people have claimed that they are those who are photographed.
