Eight are confirmed dead, over 163,000 people have been evacuated after the typhoon Soudelor reached China's east coast.

Chinese authorities have canceled hundreds of flights as a result of the powerful storm.

In Hangzhou city, eight people lost their lives, according to the state TV channel CCTV.

Heavy rain and wind made trees fall and triggered floods and landslides in the city.

Earlier in the weekend six people lost their lives when the typhoon hit Taiwan. Then the powerful storm moved into the Taiwan Strait and hit the southeastern Fujian province of China late Saturday.

The storm is also moving towards neighboring provinces Zheijang and Jiangxi on Sunday, according to the state news agency Xinhua.

The website Tropical Storm Risk has downgraded Soudelor to a tropical storm as it moved inland.

In Taiwan around half a million homes are still without power on Sunday. Around 380 people were injured in the typhoon.
