The Spanish town that has had the name ''Kill the Jews'' for 400 years, will this week finally be renamed.

The town Castrillo Matajudíos, which means "Kill the Jews", in Spanish, will now change its name after 400 years with the cruel name, reports the British newspaper The Telegraph.

It is located between Madrid and the northern coast of Spain, and took the highly controversial name in 1623. This was a time when Jews were persecuted in Spain.

Previously it was called Castrillo Mota de Judío which means "Jewish Hillock". This is the name they have now decided to go back to. The name derives from when the Jewish pioneers settled there. In 1109, Jews were massacred in the town, which may explain the old city name.

Although Jews were killed in this area, some researchers think that the town got its name because the state in 1492 demanded that Jews converted to Catholicism, and that the Jews in this way would show the Spanish authorities their loyalty. Other researchers suspect that the name may have come by a typo, according to The Telegraph.

56 of the city's residents voted for the name change, while 29 voted against it.

No Jews live in the village today, but many residents have ancient Jewish roots and the town’s official shield includes the Star of David.
