16 people have died and three are still missing after an earthquake hit the mountaintop Kinabalu in Malaysia on Friday.
The quake had a magnitude of 6.0, and it is decades since the last time the country was hit by an equally powerful quake.
Now the government in the country has given an absurd explanation for the deadly quake.
Deputy Prime Minister of the State of Sabah, which was affected by the earthquake believes that a naked stunt performed by what is supposed to be ten tourists on a mountain, which they took photos of, led to the earthquake.
The Malaysian newspaper The Star writes that many Malaysians now blame the earthquake on the tourists. According to the newspaper, one of the guides who accompanied the group on the 4095 meter high mountain explained that the tourists ignored the warnings about taking nude pictures.
Deputy Prime Minister Pairin Kitingan said according to the New York Times that it will be held a ritual ceremony to "soothe the mountain's soul."
According to the Canadian online newspaper Digital Journal it was a group of foreign tourists, including two Canadians, two Dutch and a German who conducted the naked stunt at the mountain.
The tourists are refused to leave the country, and may be prosecuted.
Islam is constitutionally the country’s official religion, where approximately 60 percent are Muslims.
However, the Shariah Law in Malaysia is only applicable to Muslims.
On Fridays, government offices and banking institutions are closed for two hours during lunchtime for the Friday prayers.
