Kill a Viking, or be killed

Kill a Viking, or be killed
Now you can fight and kill a Viking, or you'll be "killed" yourself, at a new Danish interactive experience center.

It's no longer about having to read through long heavy texts.

And no longer about exhibited segments of the story placed in glass cases.

Now you can for example be stabbed, burned, move up the Bifrost and into Valhalla to reunite with friends.

Free of charge and quite painless - and should you have a desire to avenge your death, then you can appropriately begin to practice by killing a lying Viking with more or less deadly wounds, with various kinds of weapons.

In Kongerenes Jelling, all museum dust has been brushed away and today the experience center, that in its original version was inaugurated in 2000, reopens.

Now 15 years later - after eighteen years of renovation and a total investment of 60 million DKK - it is first and foremost the guests, who through numerous interactive installations are leading the battle - like Gorm the Old, his Queen Thyra and their son Harald Blåtann controlled the Danes in the 900s.

And Vikings are depicted with harsh realism - a far cry from the somewhat romanticized light Vikings and their time are often cast in.

In connection with the reopening museum director Hans Ole Matthiesen says to Jyllands-Posten on the radical renewal of the exhibition:

"We got feedback that a proper reading of the old exhibition corresponded to stand for two hours and read a book. It was too tiring, and therefore we are now trying to make the objects interactive for the sake of the experience and not having to use technical terms, which may be hard to grasp".

The new adventure center in Jelling, which opened on Saturday, June 6 - with a variety of activities over the weekend - is built in a collaboration between the National Museum (which operates Royal Jelling), Vejle and Vejle museums.

The Berlin based firm ART + COM has been responsible for developing and building the extensive interactive part of the experience center.
