FIFA paid Ireland to drop lawsuit

FIFA paid Ireland to drop lawsuit
The Irish Football Association (FAI) in 2009 received a giant million Euro payment from FIFA to drop a potential lawsuit.

Ireland was very close of securing a place in the World Cup finals in South Africa in 2010, but lost in the playoff games against France.

Television pictures from the rematch showed that the French player Thierry Henry took the ball with his hand just before the winning goal. Central defender William Gallas scored the only goal and sent France to the World Cup.

It had both the Irish Football Association and the rest of the football world to rage.

Now Ireland's FA president John Delaney now reveals that the International Football Federation (FIFA) paid to avoid an Irish lawsuit after the controversial incident.

The amount is allegedly five million euros, but Delaney partly refuse to confirm the amount.

- I am bound by confidentiality with regard to the amount. I see that you are speculating in an amount. Well done, he says.

- We felt that we had legal grounds to run a case against FIFA, considering that we did not succeed in the playoff matches for the World Cup because of Henry's hands, says Delaney to RTE Radio 1.

Delaney points out that he and the Football Association was greatly angered by the way Sepp Blatter acted after the match. The FIFA president had a smile on his face when he talked about the incident, he says.

Both the Irish Football Association and the Irish authorities fought a long time to have the match replayed, but FIFA had the money to pay them off.
