Rick Santorum, who lost to Mitt Romney in the nominations four years ago, makes a new attempt to become the Republican presidential candidate.

The deeply conservative Catholic former senator emphasized his working-class background when he launched his candidacy on Wednesday at a meeting in his hometown of Cabot in Pennsylvania.

In the new campaign Santorum will try to go wider than just his social and religious conservative core voters, who oppose both abortion and homosexuality.

- Families in the working class does not need another president who is related to a large state or big money, he told his audience in Cabot.

He is still as much opposed to gay marriages as last time, even though the United States in four years has permitted gay marriages in 37 states.

He is also uncompromisingly against abortion and made it clear at the meeting on Wednesday that he as president "will stand for the principle that every life matters".

At the meeting on Wednesday he also proposed a number of other measures, such as abolishing the IRS, introducing a flat tax for all and crack down on illegal immigration which he believes is stealing jobs from US workers.

He also came with sharp criticism of President Barack Obama's Middle East policy, which he said lacks direction. He said the US military needs to take a much harder line against the Islamic state, IS.

- If these guys want to reintroduce a version of Islam from the seventh century, my advice is that we load our bombers and bomb them back to the seventh century, he said.

The 57 years old former senator, who was twelve years in the Senate, made a surprisingly strong effort in the campaign four years ago.
