IS took control of the historic city of Palmyra.
Now they carry out the executions in the over 2,000 year old amphitheater in the city.
- They gathered people as spectators, says Rami Abdulrahman at the Syrian Human Rights Observatory.
The World Heritage Site Palmyra in the Syrian desert, was rediscovered by merchants from Aleppo in the 1600s. They found the well-preserved ruins of the city which since the century BC was a thriving hub. Palmyra was one of the first cityscape compounds of modern type.
Last week the terrorist group ISIS conquered the city.
Now there are reports that IS carries out public executions in the ancient city's amphitheater, according to Reuters.
- They have executed about 20 people in the Roman amphitheater and call for people to look at it, as spectators, says Rami Abdulrahman at the Syrian Human Rights Observatory news agency.
IS has since seizing control of Palmyra killed at least 200 people and taken about 600 prisoners, according to the Observatory, referring to sources from within the city. The information has not been confirmed by other sources. However, IS supporters on Twitter have written about the shootings in the amphitheater.
Palmyra is the first Syrian area that IS has conquered directly from government forces. Other populated areas, IS has taken over from rival resistance groups in the four-year conflict in Syria.
Previously the terrorist group also took control of the historic city of Nimrud. They then used bulldozers to level the town, which was founded approximately 3300 years ago, to the ground.
Why ISIS has not been exterminated already, I will never understand.
