Real Madrid sacked coach Carlo Ancelotti on Monday. Rafa Benitez may be Real's new coach.

The club won no trophies this season, but last season the Italian led the capital's team to victory in the Champions League.

Ancelotti had support among the players, but still he had to step aside.

- I wish to inform you that I have taken the decision to relieve Carlo Ancelotti as coach of Real Madrid, said club president Florentino Pérez.

- It has not been an easy decision, but it is time for new inspiration for this team to win new trophies, continued the Real Madrid president.

The 55-year-old Ancelotti said that he will take a year off if he was no longer wanted in Madrid.

A new coach will be announced next week. According to Perez, it is advantageous if the new coach speaks Spanish. Rumor has it that Napoli coach Rafa Benitez replaces Ancelotti.

Benitez can still lead Napoli to the Champions League, and therefore it probably delays the decision before the former Liverpool manager will be announced as Ancelotti's replacement.
