At least nine gang members were killed in a shooting between motorcycle gangs in Waco, Texas.
The shooting occurred in a parking lot between two restaurants in the town of Waco at 12 o'clock local time on Sunday. At least nine people are so far confirmed dead.
- This is probably the most horrific scene I have ever seen during my 34 years in law enforcement. There is blood everywhere, said police spokesman Patrick Swanton at a press conference shortly after the incident.
Eight people were found dead on the scene, while the ninth person died at the hospital. Police do not exclude that the death toll could rise.
In addition, police said that at least 18 people were injured. Most of the victims were injured by bullet- or puncture wounds.
All those who are confirmed dead are affiliated with motorcycle gangs, police said.
- No guests, employees or police officers were killed, says Swanton.
He says the gang members started shooting at the police when police tried to intervene. Swanton confirms that the police returned fire.
- We do not know whether some of those killed were shot by our officers. But no policemen were injured, he said.
Now police fears that the violence will spread and there have already been several reports that MC members from across the state are headed to Waco after Sunday's shooting.
As many as 100 people have been arrested after the shooting. Many of them are known criminals.
Police did not want to reveal the names of the motorcycle gangs who were involved in the dramatic incident. But there were members from at least five different gangs on site. Some of these are allied with each other. Currently it is not known whether members of all gangs were involved in the shooting.
However, police sources told the local newspaper Waco Tribune Herald, that members of the motorcycle gangs Bandidos and Cossacks were involved in the shooting. Photos from the site also shows people with symbols used by the motorcycle gang Scimitars. According to police, as many as 150 to 200 gang members have been involved in the shooting.
- This is not a bunch of doctors, dentists and lawyers on Harleys, said Swanton from the Waco police on Monday.
One reason for the shooting was that at least two rival motorcycle gangs were trying to recruit new members in the area at the same time, writes the local newspaper.
