The Norwegian people should take Syrian refugees into their own homes, says deputy leader of the Norwegian Christian Party (KrF), Bjørg Tysdal Moe.
Today it became known that municipalities led by KrF says no to settle nearly half of the refugees they are asked to accept - despite the fact that the party wants many more refugees to Norway. The country's 17 municipalities with KrF-chairmens have so far only agreed to accept 452 of the 828 asylum seekers who the government has asked them to accept in the period 2014-2016.
Moe understand that this is financially difficult for municipalities, and says it is now time for a new approach:
- I have received emails and telephone calls from people who say that they have room in their homes. Being able to use this while keeping in mind that these are to be permanently settled, that initiative and commitment municipalities must take into the planning, Moe explains.
The Facebook group "Do you have room for an extra in your home?" now has over 2,300 members. The commitment is huge and many writes that they gladly welcomes the traumatized Muslim refugees.
KrF's deputy leader says that the private homes must cooperate with the Red Cross and the municipalities in order to get this to work and to put the private homes in order to be able to help.
- We have heard a lot about Norwegians who came to Sweden (during WWII), now it's our turn to do the opposite. The need is great, and when people are willing to open their homes, it is up to us in the municipalities to facilitate that people can be able to help. Volunteering must flourish, says Moe to P4 News.
However, this idea is not new, as it was previously suggested by an equally "smart" Norwegian politician.
