The Jordanian satire cartoonist Osam Hajjaj has received death threats from the Islamic terrorist group ISIS, after drawing a cartoon illustrating the role of women in Islam.
The matter has attracted international attention. However, Osam will not let himself be intimidated by ISIS: "These cowards will not stop me. Freedom of thought and expression is a human right. ", he says.
That cartoonist receive death threats from faithful Muslims in the Arab world is perhaps somewhat more understandable given these countries' low level of development, where Islam dominates as a political force in society. But more remarkable is it that satire cartoonists in Denmark and Sweden have to live with constant bodyguard - and 24/7 protection by the security police, because of Muslim fatwas, and that large parts of a French satire magazine editorial were killed in a terrorist attack carried out by Muslims with a severe satire-phobia.
