14 illegal immigrants from Somalia and Afghanistan were killed on Thursday night after they were hit by a train in Macedonia.

The 14 were part of a larger group of between 30 and 40 illegal immigrants who were heading north on the railway when they were hit by an express train where the track crosses a valley outside the city of Veles in central Macedonia, writes AP.

The train tracks are often used by illegal immigrants who after having immigrated illegally to Greece, are trying to get north to richer countries in northern Europe, where more generous subsidies than those in Greece awaits them.

Police detained nine migrants who remained at the scene Friday morning and questioned them about what happened and the identities of the dead. They said survivors described clambering up rocky slopes or clinging to bushes on the riverbank to escape the train.

Local media report that five similar accidents by trains occurred in November and December last year when a total of six people were killed.
